America just started building its identity around this time. They were trying to separate themselves from British rule, culture, and even food. Here are some of the things they consumed during the Revolutionary War.
Ice Cream
What’s such a common dessert or treat to us these days wasn’t so common back then. Just after the war ended, Thomas Jefferson was in France. He may have tasted it there first. He brought the recipe back and served it with warm pastry.
Firecake
This was a meal made out of necessity to survive some harsh times. It simply consisted of flour and water. Soldiers would mix their flour ration with the water and bake it in an iron kettle. Sometimes weevils or other pests got into the flour stores but they simply let it roast in the hot flame.
Pumpkin Pie
Pumpkin was a thing found in the New World. You could see a recipe to make it from an old cookbook by Hannah Glasse in 1805.
Madeira Wine
George Washington got his stock straight from the Portuguese colony Madeira.
Cranberry Tarts
Forget pop tarts, cranberry tarts were the wave back in the Revolutionary days. Hannah Glasse struck again with a good dessert recipe that included cranberries, brown sugar, flour, and butter.
Rum
With all of the fermented molasses around, Americans started to distill their own rum. There were 150 rum distilleries in just the New England territory alone.
